Lager BIB | Black Rock
Clean, crisp, and pale golden. The lager that does exactly what a lager should.
A concentrated wort kit for brewing a classic craft lager at home using Black Rock's Crafted Bag in a Box system. No heating, no second can, no additional sugar required — the sucrose is already included in the concentrate. Just pour the bag into a clean fermenter, top up with cold water to 23 litres, pitch the included yeast, and ferment.
The grain bill is built around 83% MaltEurop lager malt for a clean, pale, crisp base, with 7% Gladfield wheat malt for a smooth body and 10% sucrose already incorporated into the concentrate. NZ Green Bullet hops provide a well-balanced bitterness at IBU 26 — enough to keep the finish clean and dry without pushing into territory that distracts from the lager character. It pours pale golden with an SRM of 3 and a lacy head.
At 23 litres this kit produces 5.3% ABV. Brew to 18 litres for a stronger 6.8% ABV version. Dry hopping is optional for this style — see recommendations below. Yeast included. Makes 23 litres. Can be ordered online and shipped.
Yeast Included: SafAle US-05
Dry Hop Recommendations:
Dry hopping is optional for this style. If dry hopping, add hops at day 5 to 7 when fermentation activity starts to slow. Use 50 to 100g of fresh, refrigerated, nitrogen-flushed hop pellets. Suggested combinations by style:
- German Pilsner: Hallertau Mittelfrüh and/or Tettnang — classic crisp bitterness with floral and herbal notes.
- Czech Pilsner: Saaz — delicate, spicy, and earthy.
- American Lager: Cluster and/or Liberty — clean, mild bitterness with subtle floral and citrus notes.
- Vienna Lager: Perle and/or Saaz — balanced bitterness with a hint of spice.
- Helles Lager: Hersbrucker and/or Hallertau Mittelfrüh — mild, balanced bitterness with floral and herbal character.
- New Zealand Lager: Motueka and/or Wakatu — refreshing citrus and floral aroma.
