Ceramic boil enhancers aid the start of the boil process to ensure a smooth, even boil — add them to the wash in the boiler prior to starting the still.

Without boil enhancers, the wash in the boiler can superheat: it heats beyond its nominal boiling point without actually boiling, then suddenly erupts into violent boiling all at once. This is called bumping, and in a still it is dangerous — it can force hot liquid up through the column and into the condenser or collection system.

Ceramic boil enhancers prevent this by providing nucleation sites: tiny rough surfaces on the ceramic pieces where vapour bubbles begin to form naturally and continuously at the correct boiling point, producing a smooth, steady boil throughout the run. They also help release dissolved CO2 from the wash before the boil begins.

Add them before every distillation run.
